As a member of 1% For The Planet, we're committed to supporting organizations that are fighting environmental issues. This year, to keep our resolution to Go Greener, we decided to give our team members the chance to donate $1000 each to the partner organizations of their choice. Go behind the helmets to learn more about our team and the organizations they chose.
CHLOE- MARKETING LEAD
In another life, I think I would have been a marine biologist – all because of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They have a variety of impactful programs supporting ocean conservation, marine research, and sustainable seafood consumption. I've never lost my passion for marine life and conservation, and I want to give back to the place that inspired me so much as a child. Plus, we have to keep their live sea otter webcam going.
BRENNAN - CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Climate change is no joke and we’re experiencing its effects right here in California. In the past few years we’ve seen some of the hottest summers and most devastating fires on record, destroying millions of acres of California forests. I’m choosing to give to National Forest Foundation and their California Wildfire Restoration Fund because our forests play an important role in the Earth’s climate system. Through this fund, they will plant one native tree on a National Forest in California for every dollar donated. Can you imagine a thousand trees??
MARY - ECOMMERCE MANAGER
Economic empowerment for all is something very important to me. So many people have the talent and determination to succeed and just need the tools to allow them to embrace their own growth. I chose World Bicycle Relief because of their commitment to empowering communities to thrive. World Bicycle Relief donates bikes to communities in rural, developing countries where walking is the primary mode of transportation. With a bike, individuals are more able to travel to markets and work, school, and health clinics.
MICHAEL - SALES MANAGER
I landed on Ciclavia as a way to "think globally, act locally." Climate change needs to be addressed and I believe a simple thing most of us can do is to opt for bikes instead of cars in many situations. In order to get more people to choose this option, we need safer city infrastructure for bikes and other alternative mobility.
JAZMIN - CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
I chose the Honeybee Conservancy because it addresses two passions of mine – bee conservation and providing access to locally grown food in regions/communities that are considered food deserts. ⅓ of all of our food depends on pollination & due to the high rate of decline of bee populations our ecosystem and food supply is at risk. The HBC provides access and education of healthy food options to low-income areas that have become food deserts by creating habitats where pollination can occur and urban farms can provide better, local food options to communities that are largely underserved by supermarkets. The small act of sponsoring a hive can create a major (positive) impact on our community and our planet.
RAV - OPERATIONS ASSOCIATE
Ever since I can remember, I've been interested in where trash goes after we throw it away. You can imagine how shocked I was when I learned about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I chose Plastic Bank because they provide an incentive program to clean up ocean plastic by treating plastic as a "currency." They buy plastic from collectors at an above market rate and recycle it properly. Their work also impacts poverty-stricken areas by turning plastic into a currency so the people are able to provide for themselves.
GLORIA - CO-FOUNDER
I chose 350 because of their impactful work against climate change. The biggest reason curbing climate change is important to me is the impact it'll have on the poor. The effects of climate change will create a huge amount of climate refugees, and displace hundreds of millions of people in the next 25 years.
AMAR - CO-FOUNDER
With the help of my nieces, I chose Azulita Project. They collect trash on the streets, sort, and recycle it. They work in locations that don't have great trash systems in both inland and coastal communities. By cleaning up trash in coastal communities, they are helping prevent plastics from getting into the oceans- helping protect marine life and preventing "trash islands."
