Choosing a bike helmet size is kind of like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears… you have to find one that fits just right. Unlike snuggling up into a tiny bed and hoping for the best, there’s a little bit of precision involved in fitting your bike helmet.
HOW TO FIT YOUR THOUSAND BIKE HELMET
Thousand offers three different helmet sizes: Small (21 ¼”-22 ½”), Medium (22 ½”- 23 ¼”) and Large (23 ¼”-24 ¼”). Our helmets are designed with an integrated dial fit system so you can tighten or loosen the fit with just a twist of the dial. Because we know finding the perfect fit is so important, the interior fit pads are also removable. The best part? You won’t compromise your safety by removing them.
Curious what size dome you have? Here are three simple steps to help you measure your head and choose the right helmet size for you.
STEP ONE: GET A MEASURING TOOL
Grab a flexible measuring tape. The ones used for fabrics, sewing, etc. work really well unlike the stiff measuring tapes used for, say, home improvement projects. Don’t have a flexible measuring tape? No problem. Find a string or ribbon. If all else fails, use your phone charger. We know you have one of those.
STEP TWO: MEASURE
Wrap the measuring tape, string, ribbon or charger around the largest part of your head. It should hit just above your eyebrows. For those of you using anything other than the measuring tape, you’ll need to mark where the top end meets the other side of the string/ribbon/charger. Use a ruler to measure the length.
STEP THREE: CHOOSE A SIZE
Each Thousand helmet product page includes a handy size guide. Take your measurement and compare it to the chart. If you’re in between sizes, we recommend sizing down. Remember, you can always use the integrated dial fit system to make adjustments. Tip: If you’re an avid hat wearer and know your hat size, you can also use that measurement as a guide. We include hat sizes on our chart, too.
When you get the helmet home (yay!), this is where you can do a little customization. As we mentioned in the beginning of this article, the interior fit pads on Thousand helmets are removable if you so choose. You’ll want to pop the helmet on and clip the buckle. Our styles have a magnetic buckle for one-hand closing in a pinch (but without the literal pinch). The helmet straps should form a V and rest gently under each ear.
A well-fitting bike helmet should be snug, but not too tight. It should rest level on your head and should not tilt back. If it does, that means it’s too large or too loose. The front edge of the helmet should be about one inch or less above your eyebrows.
Ready to pick out your cool helmet? Don’t forget to take a peek at the size chart after taking your measurement.
