At Thousand, we believe that access to urban mobility can create opportunities and have a lasting positive impact on our community. That’s why we’re partnering with a local organization we know and love, Healthy Active Streets, and their unique Adopt-a-Bike program.
We’re giving 200 helmets and 200 bike light sets to our friends at HAS as they work with transitionally unhoused high school students in the Los Angeles area over the next six months.
Behind Healthy Active Streets
HAS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, organize, and provide resources to underserved communities to achieve mobility equity and environmental justice.
They are based in Long Beach, where people of color are disproportionately injured and killed while using active transportation and disproportionately exposed to environmental pollution, largely due to port activities and goods movement.
Through education, HAS chips away at socio-cultural barriers to biking that historically impinge on low-income communities of color, and through advocacy, they empower residents to affect the changes they want to see in their communities.
What is the Adopt-a-Bike Program?
One of the many ways HAS gives back to our communities is through their ongoing partnership with Metro to provide bikes to people in need.
Adopt-a-Bike is a program where HAS collects donated bicycles from Metro and refurbishes them so that they are safe and reliable. They then give these bikes to people who would not otherwise be able to afford one, like students.
This program has helped hundreds of people access their cities more easily by giving them alternative modes of transportation. HAS believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of riding a bike, and they’re committed to making cycling more accessible for everyone.
HAS will provide our bike lights and helmets, refurbished bikes, and safety programming to help students gain access to mobility to and from school.
How You Can Give Back to Students and HAS
For the first time ever, you can choose to donate at checkout when you shop at Thousand this holiday season.
If you have a bicycle that you would like to donate, you can also donate the bicycle to HAS—or make a financial contribution directly to their organization.
Lastly, you can support HAS by following their Instagram to learn how to get involved with mobility justice, and share this blog and the mission of HAS with your fellow riders!
